State of Colorado Has Issued A National Garbage Man Day Proclamation

WHEREAS, inspired to recognize the often thankless job of waste collectors, John Arwood,
second-generation owner of Arwood Waste Collection Services, began the annual observance
of National Garbage Man Day on June 17, 2012; and

WHEREAS, the men and women employed by local refuse collection and hauling companies
that are contracted by the State of Colorado make significant contributions to the safety,
health, and welfare of our citizens; and

WHEREAS, with an area spanning 104,185 square miles and thousands of miles of roads,
Colorado depends on the rain-or-shine collection of waste and recyclables to promote a
clean and safe community; and

WHEREAS, according to the Center for Disease Control, the eradication of many diseases in
the Western World is due in large part to higher public sanitation standards resulting from
effective garbage disposal; and

WHEREAS, the proper collection and disposal of waste and recyclables are vital to
preventing disease, litter and dump heaps; and

WHEREAS, the people of Colorado value and celebrate our local sanitation industry
employees for their commitment to our residents, businesses and communities.
Therefore, I, Jared Polis, governor of the State of Colorado, do hereby proclaim the period
between June 17, 2019 and June 24, 2019 as,

GARBAGE MAN WEEK
