Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) It’s a day to celebrate the men and women who wake up at the crack of dawn to pickup your trash throughout the week. Most would agree it’s a dirty, but necessary job.

Taylor Garbage has been doing it for more than 30 years.

The family-owned business works primarily in Broome and Tioga counties removing residential trash.

The company makes safety of its employees and residents in the community a top priority.

“We’re in and out of traffic all day, so it’s very important that if you’re in traffic you have to watch what the cars are doing, because you don’t know what they’re going to do,” said employee Thomas Velez.

Before a Taylor truck even leaves the lot, a truck test is done.

“We do a pre-trip. We check the oil, check the lights and make sure it all working. Then we start the trucks up and get ready to leave,” said employee Richard Northup.

Taylor Garbage warns residents trucks that large don’t stop fast, so it’s important for both the truck drivers and others on the road to pay attention and wait for a signal to pass.

Crews also make sure to wear bright colors to make themselves easily visible to cars passing by.

Taylor Garbage runs 24 trucks full-time. Each truck makes close to 1,000 stops per route and together they haul in nearly 13 tons of trash each day.

“We try to make the cans upright and put the lids on and make sure they’re not going to blow away and roll in the street and get run over,” Velez said.

All of these procedures and precautions keep the customers happy and safe.

June 17 is Waste and Recycling Workers Week.

A lot has changed since then and now the third generation of our family upholds the ideals of hard work and making the world a better place. We have expanded and created jobs… we are pioneers in bringing recycling to the area and finding new and better ways to green up our little part of the world.

The future we see is full of hope with innovations on the horizon and new ways to make the world a better and greener place. We, in our humble way, are still holding to the history that made us what we are and serving the community.
