Safety Tuesday: Signs That The Other Driver Is Distracted

Knowing the signs to look for to spot a distracted driver can help you avoid a wreck and minimize the severity of an accident.

  • Drifting or swerving from a lane
  • Sudden breaking in reaction to normal traffic stops
  • Running red lights or stop signs
  • Following too closely
  • Stopping long than necessary at traffic stops
  • Driving is much slower or faster than normal traffic conditions
  • Vehicle is full of passengers (especially kids)
  • Driver is looking around, moving head rapidly (they’re lost)
  • Driver’s head is looking down rapidly (texting)
  • Driver’s hand is up to the side of their head (talking on their phone)

  • Look inside the other vehicle and watch for warning signs
  • Slow down and stay farther away, so you can maneuver, if needed
