LOWER EAST SIDE — A homeless man was arrested after stealing a car and severely injuring the ankle of a worker with a private garbage company in a hit-and-run Tuesday afternoon, sources said.

The 49-year-old worker with Action Carting , whose name wasn’t immediately released, was outside his flatbed truck at 215 Chrystie St., just south of East Houston Street, when the driver of the red Honda Civic hit him about 12:30 p.m., officials said.

The victim suffered a “severe ankle injury” and bone was poking through his skin, sources said. He was treated at Bellevue HospitalFDNY officials said.

Police had arrested the driver, whose name and age weren’t immediately released, by 3 p.m., sources said.

The suspect is homeless and had stolen the Honda, sources said.

A spokesman for New Jersey-based Action Carting confirmed the incident, but didn’t provide further details.

Action Carting itself has hit numerous pedestrians and killed five people since 2008.

Most recently, a driver fatally struck Neftaly Ramirez as he rode his bike home from his job in Greenpoint.

The driver left the scene, but police never pressed charges because they think he hit Ramirez by accident
